Why Resolve to Net Zero?
By 2050 the UK Government has pledged that the country’s carbon emissions will be ‘net zero’ and has also encouraged small businesses to reduce their emissions in half by 2030.
As well as being influenced from stakeholder and consumer pressure, companies already committed to achieving Net Zero by 2030 are encouraging other businesses to do so as part of their supply chain policy and Carbon Reduction Plan. These companies understand that it:
- Makes smart business sense
- Gives themselves a competitive market advantage
- Offers a greater prospect of attracting the top talent – people who want to work for a company that is seen as making a difference and being responsible
- Supports staff retention, with employees buying into the company ethos and brand.
“UK businesses are encouraged to have a Net Zero Carbon Reduction Plan in place by 2030 in order to bid for government contracts.”
Take the lead in the race to Net Zero.
What is Net Zero?
In simple terms, net zero means new emissions of greenhouse gasses are not being added to the atmosphere. Although emissions will continue, these will be balanced by absorbing an equivalent amount from the atmosphere.
Overall, net zero is the internationally agreed goal for mitigating global warming in the second half of this century, with the ambition to limit global warming to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels following on from the Paris Agreement 2015.
By 2050 the UK Government has pledged that the country’s carbon emissions will be ‘net zero’ and has also encouraged small businesses to reduce their emissions in half by 2030.
The urgency to achieve net zero can be seen by the climate stripes image, showing the progressive heating of our planet over more than 150 years. Each stripe represents the average temperature for a single year, with red showing hotter-than-average years occurring in recent decades.
Why should my business be interested in Net Zero?
The simple answer is that it makes smart business sense. Stakeholder, supply chain and legislative pressures are only increasing, and companies that have invested in reducing carbon emissions are already seeing financial and market benefits.
Most SMEs have little awareness or understanding of major Government environmental initiatives, and most businesses don’t track their environmental impact, with only 1 in 3 measuring it. Yet SMEs make up 99% of UK business and produce 1/3 of our greenhouse gas emissions.
To achieve the 2050 Net Zero target, businesses will have a key role to play and are therefore charged with managing, reporting, and reducing their carbon emissions. And, in order to bid for government contracts, as well as halving their emissions by 2030, UK businesses are encouraged to have a Net Zero Carbon Reduction Plan in place.
Business must now react and adapt. Therefore, many companies and organisations see net zero as being an opportunity to lead the way and are meeting this challenge head-on and with the right support, the vast majority of SMEs will benefit financially from reducing their carbon footprint.
